  • With the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.3, Red Hat began transitioning the support and delivery of Kubernetes from the RHEL 7 Extras repository to OpenShift Container Platform.
  • With the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5, the kubernetes packages shipped in the RHEL 7 Extras channel are deprecated, and Red Hat no longer supports the manual installation and configuration of kubernetes on RHEL.
  • OpenShift Container Platform is Red Hat’s fully supported distribution of Kubernetes. Existing environments need to be migrated to OpenShift Container Platform. Please contact your account team with questions/concerns about this.

The Extras repository is a means to introduce operating system technology that moves at a faster pace than the RHEL minor release cadence. This has proved to be a successful delivery means for projects like docker and cockpit. While this was initially the right choice for Kubernetes, the Kubernetes upstream project’s scope has grown considerably beyond container orchestration and into a complete platform of it’s own.

This transition of Kubernetes support and delivery to OpenShift Container Platform impacts customers using Kubernetes with Red Hat Enterprise Linux & Red Hat Enterprise Linux Atomic Host. With the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5, the kubernetes packages shipped in the RHEL 7 Extras channel are deprecated, and Red Hat no longer supports the manual installation and configuration of kubernetes on RHEL.
