Most users get the “Something Happened” error, quite common for users downloading the upgrade on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. However 0x800704DD-0x90016 update sometimes follows after the “Something Happened” and it appeared a lot to users having the pirated version of Windows.
Also users downloading Windows 10 via the Media Creation Tool provided by Microsoft have also complained regarding the same issue on forums.
Is there a proper fix? Currently not a lot of users have faced this issue and those who did have not been able to get a proper solution on forums. Certain suggestions to the 0x800704DD-0x90016 error revolve around admin rights issue.
Fix # 1:Users running the Media Creation Tool claimed that letting the app run with admin privileges fixes the issue. However the best way to fix it is to ensure that the User Account you are signed in to either you Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 has administrator privileges. Switching to an admin account resolved the issue.
Fix # 2:Providing Windows Update admin access is another possible solution. Users downloading Windows 10 via Windows Update can provide the service admin access via Command Prompt. For those wary about tweaking stuff, all you need to do is open Command Prompt as an administrator and Copy/Paste the exact command in order to not miss out “wuauclt.exe /updatenow” without the quotes. Do not hit enter just yet, instead open Windows Update manually and then hit enter in CMD. Windows 10 update should then start downloading normally.
Fix # 3:Some users have also claimed that it could be that other services are interfering with the setup process. Disabling the Antivirus program during the download and installation process might speed it up. Along with this it is recommended to disconnect all other USB Devices except your mouse and keyboard plugged in. Try a clean boot and try the download again if it fails, unplugging all the devices and use the ISO file process to install Windows 10 if the direct upgrade process fails.
If none of these fixes resolved the issue please leave a comment below indicating that it did not and if they did then do mention which one resolved the error. Also if you come across another solution to this fix do notify in the comments section below. However do ensure that your machine is eligible for a Windows 10 upgrade and you did not jump the line.
NB:homebase version cannot update freely.
