这主要取决于2个选择：(1)你打算把vCenter装在物理机上还是打算装一台虚拟机，(2)你的主机(host)是不是连接SAN

如果你的主机是独立主机(Standalone)，直接进行ESX安装吧。

如果你的主机是vCenter管理环境的一部分并且连接SAN，那你应该先安装vCenter，然后再安装ESX，然后配置SAN存储。如下时间顺序

1.     安装配置vCenter服务器
2.     安装配置ESX主机
3.     连接SAN到每一台ESX主机 
4.     创建新的VM或者将物理机迁移到VMware环境

如果你计划将你的vCenter服务器也做成一台VM，那你可能需要先搭建第一台ESX主机，或者在VMware Worstation上安装vCenter服务器，然后等vSphere平台搭建完毕后用VMware Converter将vCenter从VMware Workstation导入到虚拟平台上来。(delxu注：建议后者)

So what should I set up first? 

It mainly depends on two things: if you will be using a physical or virtual vCenter server and whether or not your host is (or will be) SAN-attached.  

If your host is standalone, go ahead and start the install. Be sure to check back with this guide if you have a question.  

If your host will be part of a vCenter Server managed environment and SAN-attached, then you should probably first build your vCenter Server, then install ESX, and then deal with SAN storage. Below is a chronological approach to implementing your Virtual Infrastructure when your vCenter server is physical: 

1.     Configure your vCenter Server implementation 
2.     Install and configure your ESX hosts 
3.     Attach hosts to your SAN 
4.     Migrate your physical servers or create new VMs. 

If you planned for your vCenter server to be a virtual machine you will need to setup at least one ESX host or install it on VMware Workstation and use VMware Converter to import it into your virtual environment.
